Summer is upon us, and if your grill isn’t already out, it will be soon! Here are 3 things you can do while grilling that will make cleanup go well afterwards.
- Oil the grates. Be sure the grates are well oiled, particularly when you’re cooking vegetables or lean meats, to prevent the food from sticking to the grates. Cleanup is much more cumbersome when excessive food is clinging to the grates! Once you’ve preheated the grill, soak a paper towel in vegetable oil and use tongs to rub the oiled paper towel along the grates. You can also lightly coat vegetables in oil before placing them on the grates. Just be sure you never spray cooking oil directly on a hot grill.
- Use a grill pan. Not everything fares well when tossed right onto the grates. Use a grill pan to keep chopped veggies and smaller pieces of food cooking evenly and to prevent them from falling into the grill and making the post-grilling cleanup more challenging. A grill pan is also great for grilling fish filets and other more delicate meat.
- Use the grill brush as you go. If you don’t have a grill brush, crumple a ball of foil tightly and use the tongs to rub it across the grates as you’d use a brush. Brush away from yourself, and use great care not to burn yourself. And then be sure you pick up a good quality grill brush as soon as you can! A good grill brush is essential to keeping your grill in good shape.
